In-Flight Wi-Fi is a revolutionary service that enables people to remain connected and updated with the latest activities all across the globe even while travelling above 3,000 meters in the air. 

The global in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity market is projected to register a substantial compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.50% over the forecast period.

In year 2015 & 2016, India is not expected to contribute any share to the Asian Inflight Wifi market size but permission for in-flight wifi services is under review and permission may be granted by the end of 2016. If the permission is granted, there would be no cap limits on the pricing according to the government officials. It is believed that, government in countries like India would provide a green signal to start the wifi services in the aircrafts. Hence, a spur is expected to arise in the continent in 2017.

The number of users of internet in a country like India is soaring at a high pace and is anticipated to reach around 411 million in 2018 in comparison to that of 226 million in 2014. This increase in the number of internet users has led to an increase in the usage of web enabled devices like mobile phones, laptops, tablets in the country. Thus, it is noteworthy to mention that India owns a great potential for the growth of in-flight Wi-Fi market in the future citing the rising number of internet users in the country.

With rising use of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. in the country, the number of social media users would also increase in future. This trend would surely expand the opportunities for the growth of in-flight W-Fi in India. In a major country such as India, the penetration of social media is witnessing a continuous increase in recent few years. Currently, the total number of social media users in the country is approximately 144 million. Out of this, 120 million users belonged to the urban areas and 24 million from that of rural areas in India.

The global in-flight Wi-Fi market is likely to be fuelled by increasing number of commercial aircrafts all over the world, which are anticipated to reach to 40,020 by 2032. In addition to that, rising penetration of smartphones and formulation of favorable guidelines by the aviation authorities for the use of in-flight Wi-Fi services inside an aircraft would further bid to boost the airborne wireless connectivity market over the next few years.

However, lack of safety and security, higher costs and lack of technology are some of the major challenges that would restrain the growth of India in-flight Wi-Fi market during the forecast period. The India in-flight Wi-Fi market is segmented on the basis of type such as hardware and services. 

On the basis of technology, the market is segmented into two main types i.e. ATG (Air-to-Ground) and satellite technology. Globally, the ATG technology covered the largest segment of the market in 2015, but owing to larger adoption of the satellite based technology by the airline companies, the satellite segment is anticipated to observe the highest compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22.03% during 2015-2021.

It has been noticed that North America captured the highest share in worldwide in-flight Wi-Fi market in 2015 followed by Europe. Maintaining the same trend, North America is projected to dominate the global inflight WiFi market between 2015 and 2021. Asia Pacific region is anticipated to grow at a rapid pace owing to some of the major factors such as robust economic growth, rising disposable income and increasing penetration of smartphones.
