Biological Safety Cabinet Market Growth Drivers and Challenges:
Growth Drivers
-
Rising incidences of infectious diseases: Some of the common infections in the world are tuberculosis, measles, monkeypox, cholera, common cold, etc. According to the World Economic Forum in 2023, a projected 10.8 million people fell ill with TB globally. Also, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in March 2025, the ongoing global outbreak of mpox has caused 100,000 cases in almost 122 total countries. A biological safety cabinet is a basic requirement used to protect personnel against infectious agents. Also, it prevents the spread of infections and protects against the disease.
-
Rising awareness about laboratory safety: Biosafety cabinets are widely adopted by laboratory employees to avoid infections. According to the survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in over 80 laboratories in December 2024, 33% of researchers reported at least 1 laboratory-acquired infection. Also, 41 total bacterial laboratory-acquired infections were reported. Many of those infections were Shigella, Salmonella, Brucella, Neisseria meningitidis, etc.
- Rising investment in research and development: According to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, currently, the global spending on research and development has reached a record high of almost USD 1.7 trillion. Most of the research has been done in personalized medicine, telemedicine, vaccine development, 3D printing in healthcare, etc. The increased investment in research and development activities is constantly finding more viable opportunities for the biological safety cabinets market.
Challenges
-
High cost of the product: Biological safety cabinets are expensive, and their high cost can be a significant barrier to adoption, especially for smaller laboratories and research institutions. Also, there are chances that research institutes may not allocate a budget for buying BSCs and opt for other products, such as PPEs.
-
Imbalance in airflow: The uneven airflow distribution leads to inadequate containment within the BSC. Users have to ensure proper distribution by keeping the work area clean and avoiding restraint in the airflow.
